One AirPod is quieter than the other: how to fix the imbalance
Check charge, speaker mesh, iPhone audio balance, fit, and left-right output before assuming one AirPod is damaged.

IN THIS GUIDE
Uneven AirPods volume can come from a blocked mesh, unequal charge, an off-center balance setting, fit, software, or hardware. Test the simple causes in a fixed order so one change does not hide another.
SHORT ANSWER
Charge both AirPods, remove the ear tips where applicable, inspect the microphone and speaker meshes, and set Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → Balance to the middle. Clean only with Apple’s model-specific method, then compare left and right output at the same volume.
KEY POINTS
- Confirm both AirPods are charged and connected before cleaning anything.
- Check the iPhone balance slider and inspect both meshes under the same light.
- Use a left-right test after cleaning; persistent imbalance may require a reset or service.
Check charge and balance
Place both AirPods in the case for at least 30 seconds, then confirm that each side is charging. On iPhone, open Accessibility, choose Audio & Visual, and make sure the Balance slider is centered.
- Charge both AirPods and reconnect them.
- Center the Audio & Visual balance slider.
- Play the same mono voice sample in both ears.
- Note whether the quiet side follows the AirPod or your ear.
Inspect and clean the exact model
Remove AirPods Pro ear tips and compare the speaker and microphone meshes. If debris is visible, use Apple’s instructions for that generation. AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3 have a specific mesh-cleaning process; AirPods Max uses a different cushion and headband method.
Run a controlled left-right comparison
After the AirPods are completely dry, PulseClean AirPods Clean and the channel test can help compare both sides. Keep volume moderate. If one side remains silent or much quieter, follow Apple’s reset and service steps rather than increasing the test volume.
People also ask
Can earwax make one AirPod quieter?
Yes. Debris on one speaker mesh can reduce output, but use only Apple’s method for that model rather than pushing material through the mesh.
Should I move the balance slider toward the quiet AirPod?
First center the slider and diagnose the cause. Moving balance can hide a blockage or hardware problem and reduce overall output on the other side.
