  2. Avoid shortcuts that cause damage
  3. Check sound after cleaning

AirPods models use different mesh layouts and can have model-specific cleaning instructions. Identify the model first, then follow the current Apple method for that exact design rather than using a sharp tool or a generic internet trick.

KEY POINTS

  • Never run AirPods under water or use sharp or abrasive objects on the mesh.
  • Use the cleaning method Apple specifies for the exact AirPods or AirPods Pro model.
  • Allow the AirPods to dry completely before returning them to the case or using them.
01

Identify the model and the mesh

Check the model before cleaning because Apple’s current guidance differs by generation. Clean only the areas shown for that model. If the AirPods were exposed to soap, lotion, sunscreen, or another substance, address the exterior according to Apple’s instructions as well.

02

Avoid shortcuts that cause damage

Do not place the AirPods under running water. Do not push pins, metal picks, or abrasive material into the mesh. Keep liquid out of charging ports and do not put anything into the case contacts.

  1. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth for the body.
  2. Use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for loose debris where Apple permits it.
  3. Follow Apple’s specified mesh-cleaning materials and timing when the model requires a deeper method.
  4. Let every part dry completely before charging or listening.
03

Check sound after cleaning

Test at a comfortable volume after the AirPods are fully dry. A tone or channel check can help compare left and right output, but it cannot fix damaged drivers, batteries, or electronics. If one side remains quiet or distorted, use Apple’s troubleshooting and service options.
