A MacBook speaker grille can collect surface dust, but quiet or distorted audio may also come from app volume, output selection, balance, or hardware. Begin with Apple’s general cleaning rules and avoid pushing debris deeper into the computer.

KEY POINTS

  • Shut down the MacBook and unplug the power adapter and accessories.
  • Use only soft, lint-free materials on the exterior and keep moisture away from every opening.
  • Check macOS output and volume settings before concluding that the speakers are blocked.
01

Prepare a safe work area

Place the closed-down MacBook on a clean, stable surface. Disconnect power and peripherals. Apple advises against aerosol sprays, bleach, abrasives, and spraying cleaner directly onto the product.

02

Clean the surface, not the inside

Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to lift loose surface dust. Do not pour liquid onto the grille, insert a tool through the holes, or use compressed air to force material inside. If contamination has entered an opening, professional service is safer than probing it.

03

Troubleshoot the audio path

After cleaning, start the Mac and confirm that built-in speakers are selected in System Settings, the output is not muted, and the app has its own volume enabled. Test more than one trusted audio source. Persistent crackling, imbalance, or silence can indicate a service issue rather than surface dust.
