iPhone speaker sounds muffled after water: what to do

Separate moisture near the speaker grille from a wet charging port or hardware damage, then test the same audio after drying.

IN THIS GUIDE
  1. Confirm that the problem started after moisture
  2. Dry, run one speaker cycle, and compare
  3. Rule out debris, settings, and damage

Muffled sound after rain, a splash, or steam can come from water near the speaker opening, but similar symptoms can also come from a blocked case, debris, audio settings, or damaged hardware.

SHORT ANSWER

Remove the case, dry the exterior, place the iPhone speaker-side down on a lint-free cloth, and give it airflow. A controlled Water Eject cycle may help moisture near the speaker opening. If muffling remains after the phone is dry, check the grille, settings, and speaker with a repeatable test or arrange service.

KEY POINTS

  • Dry first; do not charge a wet iPhone or insert anything into the connector.
  • Compare the same voice or music sample before and after one controlled speaker session.
  • Persistent crackling, silence, or distortion after drying can indicate a problem beyond surface moisture.
01

Confirm that the problem started after moisture

Remove the case and disconnect Bluetooth or other audio outputs. Test a familiar voice recording at moderate volume. If sound became muffled immediately after moisture exposure, dry the phone before changing settings or cleaning the grille.

02

Dry, run one speaker cycle, and compare

Keep the speaker opening directed downward, allow airflow, and run one Water Eject session only when the phone is otherwise safe to use. Then play the same reference clip at the same volume. PulseClean Sound Check or Pro Speaker Test makes this comparison repeatable.

  1. Dry the exterior and remove the case.
  2. Run one controlled Water Eject session.
  3. Wait, then replay the same reference audio.
  4. Stop if distortion, heat, or other symptoms increase.
03

Rule out debris, settings, and damage

After the iPhone is fully dry, inspect the speaker opening and check Silent mode, Focus, volume, audio output, and any case or film that covers an opening. Apple recommends a clean dry soft-bristled brush only when the opening is visibly dirty. Seek service if the issue persists.

People also ask

Why does an iPhone sound underwater after a splash?

Moisture near the speaker opening can damp the speaker membrane and grille until it evaporates or moves away.

Will maximum volume dry the speaker faster?

Not necessarily. Use a controlled session at a moderate level and stop if the sound becomes harsh or distorted.
