Duplicate vs similar photos: what to review before deleting
Exact copies are usually simple; burst shots, edits, and near-identical moments need a closer look.

Two images can look almost identical in a grid while carrying different detail, timing, edits, or metadata. A careful cleanup treats exact duplicates and visually similar photos as different decisions.
KEY POINTS
- Exact duplicates may still have different metadata or editing history.
- For similar shots, compare focus, expressions, motion, and the version used in albums or projects.
- Keep the best original before removing compressed copies or exports.
Understand the group
Duplicate detection usually looks for matching or equivalent files. Similar-photo analysis groups images that share visual content. The second group can include a useful burst sequence, alternate framing, or an edited version worth keeping.
Compare what the thumbnail hides
Open the images at full size. Zoom into faces and fine detail, check whether motion blur is present, and compare dates, resolution, file size, favourites, and edits. For Live Photos, review the movement as well as the key frame.
Choose a keeper first
Mark the strongest image before selecting anything for deletion. Keep a version that is sharp, complete, and meaningful. If one file has been edited for a project, confirm that the original or final export remains available where you expect it.
