How to play Alias: quick rules for game night
Set up teams, explain words without saying them, and score a round in a few simple steps.

Alias works because the rule is instantly familiar: help your team guess a word by explaining it in other words. The timer adds pressure, while team play makes even a wrong guess entertaining.
KEY POINTS
- Split into at least two teams and choose a category everyone can understand.
- Explain the target word without saying the word itself or an obvious part of it.
- Score correct guesses, pass when necessary, and rotate the person explaining.
Prepare the round
Create balanced teams, agree on the winning score, and choose a category. For a mixed group, begin with familiar everyday words before moving to specialist themes or higher difficulty.
Explain, do not translate
Describe meaning, purpose, appearance, location, or a situation connected with the word. Use examples and opposites when they help. Avoid saying the word, a direct translation, or a form that gives away the answer.
- Start the timer.
- Explain one word at a time.
- Mark a correct guess and continue.
- Pass when the word stalls the round.
- Hand the turn to the next team when time ends.
Keep the rules light
Decide disputed answers quickly and continue. The best house rule is the one the whole room understands before the next timer starts. If new players are joining, play one practice round without scoring.
